Today, the fort, with its partially underground preserved building remains, the reconstructed north gate, the large thermal baths and the Roman museum with integrated Limes information center, is one of the most important addresses for Limes research in Germany.

With one minor interruption, the fort was probably occupied continuously by the Ala I Hispanorum Auriana (1st Spanish Cavalry Unit Auriana). The Alae (in German: wings) were independently operating cavalry units with both tactical and strategic functions, consisting of 16 turmae (departments) of around 30 to 33 riders each.

The Cohors IX Batavorum equitata milliaria exploratorum, which is also attested, could possibly be assigned to the second wood-earth camp in the east in the "Breitung" area.
