As early as 1400 there were three chief castles in Dornum, the Westerburg, Norderburg and the Osterburg - the later Beningaburg.
According to legend, between 1375 and 1380 olde Hero Attena (of Dornum) built the moated castle. In 1410, the Osterburg first inherited his son Enno. Enno's son Sibold (olde Sibo) married Frauwa, daughter of Enno Edzardisna and Gela von Manslagt, sister of Ulrich and Edzard Cirksena. Sibet probably died in the Battle of Bargebur in 1433. His son Sibet Attena married in the first marriage with Onna von Stedesdorf, who u. a. a son, Hero Omken d. J. donated. Sibet was present at the ceremonial award of the imperial county to Ulrich in the guest house church in Emden and was knighted on this occasion. Sibet Attena was a loyal follower of Ulrich. When this was once again in dispute with Tanno von Wittmund, advanced Sibet, appeared on Christmas night 1457 in front of the Kankenaburg in Wittmund and penetrated into the castle. Sibet built a new castle in Wittmund. In comparison of 1461 Tanne Kankena had to renounce his castle in Wittmund and received as compensation the Osterburg in Dornum. Sibo Attena died in 1473 and his son Eger Kankena († 1497) inherited the castle.
