The city wall is almost completely preserved and can even be walked on over a length of approx. 220 meters. From up there you have a beautiful view of the Kneipp spa town of Bad Münstereifel.

The starting point for the settlement of Münstereifel was the founding of a monastery by the Prüm Benedictine abbey in the first half of the 9th century. The monastery experienced rapid growth after the acquisition of the relics of St. Chrysanthus and Daria as a sought-after place of pilgrimage from 844.

At the end of the 13th century and in the first half of the 14th century, under the rule of the Dukes of Jülich, the entire settlement of “Moenstere in der Eyffelen” was secured by walling as a valley fortress against the Archdiocese of Cologne. According to Renard, “Rheinische Städtebilder, p. 116”, Bad Münstereifel is considered “the clearest and best-preserved, but also the only example of systematic walling of an entire valley section” (in Germany)! The castle, as part of the curtain wall, was first mentioned in a document in 1317. Initially as the seat of the Lords of Jülich - Bergheim, later as the state castle of the Dukes of Jülich as the official residence of the bailiff and bailiff. The castle was destroyed in 1689 by troops of the French King Louis

The city wall transports the visitor into the history of Bad Münstereifel. Imagine who has passed this gate over the years and pause for a moment.
