    Europe's largest fish ladder
... is a model for success: It was put into operation on 1 August 2010 - since then, around 1.7 million animals have used the ascent assistance; In the meantime, 50 different species have been detected. At the Fish Passage symposium in Groningen in June 2015, Europe's largest fish ladder, which is fully geared to the needs of fish, received recognition as the "Outstanding Project in Fisheries & Ecohydrology".

    The largest fishway in Europe.
Falling water levels and a considerable deterioration of the fairway were the result of the expansion of the Port of Hamburg at the end of the 19th century. In order to regulate the water level, the construction of a barrage was necessary.
However, such facilities can significantly affect the habitat of the fish. In search of food and suitable spawning and nursery areas, fish often travel several hundred kilometers. Species such as lampreys, salmon and eels are therefore highly endangered. So that the Elbe at Geesthacht is consistent and the fish can use their natural trails again, built Vattenfall at this point the largest fish migration system in Europe.
Since the opening in August 2010, not only the ships can swim upstream, but also numerous species of fish. The largest fish ladder in Europe is regarded as a true model of success - around 1.7 billion animals have since passed through the ascent aid at Geesthacht.

The new fish ladder was built by Vattenfall as an ecological compensation for the power plant Moorburg. She is very successful and was awarded in 2015. Visually, it does not look as original as the old one, but that's not the point.Left:

This fish ladder also pleased a seal in 2014, but he had to return to the North Sea.shz.de/regionales/schleswig-holstein/panorama/seehund-schlemmt-in-geesthachter-fischtreppe-id6297901.html

To drive over the Elbrücke of Geesthacht is great. I have often done so.
The Northern Fish Stairs was built as an ecological compensation measure for the power plant Moorburg by Vattenfall and opened in 2010. It is Europe's largest and has cost about 20 million €. It became necessary because the southern one was unsuitable for larger fish.

On the one hand, the fish ladder does not seem so great at first glance. But it is quite a nice difference in altitude is overcome.

Here I could spend hours looking at the Elbe :) and the fish ladder on the northern edge is to my knowledge the largest in Europe :)
