The more than 700 meters long Speierlingallee in Hattersheim connects the orchard rondel with the walnut quarters and the "Wiese am Kastengrund".
Speierling trees are heat-loving, ancient cultivated plants of the rose family. Originating from the sub-Mediterranean region, they occur only very rarely north of the Alps as a wild-growing plant. The northernmost distribution area for the cultivated form of the tree is the Rhine-Main region.
Typical of the fruits, which look like small apples or even small pears, is a high proportion of tannic acid. Edible, they are only in overripe condition. The use in the not yet ripe state with the apple wine production is a specialty from the Frankfurt area. Only then receives the "Stöffche", which is shortened like called "Speierling", its fine-dry aroma and a long shelf life.
Sprouts are considered as potentially endangered according to the Red List Hesse. The wood of the sprouts is the heaviest wood of European deciduous trees. It is popular in the veneer industry and furniture manufacturing, but is also popular for making bagpipes and wood planing.
