Workers who, for example, were out and about on the steep slopes of the Rheingau wine distillery Asbach were admired by their colleagues, but only the young and strong could hold out. Not quite so lucrative steep slopes (facing north or east) have therefore been largely abandoned.

The photo from 1934 shows the arduous work in steep-slope viticulture, which at that time was often the only source of income in this region alongside fruit growing. In steep-slope viticulture, the often extreme hillside situation does not allow machine cultivation of the parcels divided by dry stone walls. As a result, 58% of the vineyard areas in the Middle Rhine Valley that existed around 1900 are completely and irretrievably fallow. Source: Text information board
