THE HISTORY BEHIND THE HUNGETURM RIESHOFEN

A farmer's son from Töging, Matthias Kornprobst, was persuaded by a Jew, Joseph von Töging, to rob the parish church in Riedenburg. He buried the stolen goods at Pfennighof near Dietfurt. Later he wanted to sell the vessels to Joseph. This theft flew open and after a long torture Matthias confessed to the act. He was sentenced to death by the sword and publicly executed.

Joseph was sentenced to starvation and taken to the tower in Rieshofen. There he was lowered down the tower with ropes, where he died 42 days later.
Since then, the keep in Rieshofen is called "hunger tower".

The Rieshofen moated castle was built around 1290 by the servants of the Bishopric of Eichstätt and was a bishop's fief.
All that remained was the Hunger Tower.

Rieshofen - The castle, probably built in 1250
The keep, which is around 17 to 18 meters high, is still preserved from the former moated castle. Three further floors of simpler masonry rise from a base of smooth limestone blocks, around six meters high. A barrel vault completes the last floor. The mound of earth with the mighty oak tree next to the tower marks the site of the collapsed residential building. The moat, which was once seven to eight meters wide and then largely leveled, was deepened again a few years ago. The ring is still partially visible.
