The juniper heath is unique. It is a true pasture for insects, a habitat for birds and other small animals. At the same time, sheep graze here to maintain the balance of nature.

Gungoldinger juniper heath
What gives the pagan its peculiar character are the countless specimens of the mostly bush-shaped common juniper. In between there are also columnar growth forms. In addition to the juniper stands, which are loosened up by wild roses, sloes and hawthorn, a magnificent steppe heather was able to hold onto the rocks and rocky parts.

Today's appearance of the open heathland is due to a long-term nature conservation project: between 2009 and 2017, the numerous spruce stands have been cleared and the heath has been "uncovered" again, in some cases even newly created by applying seed. So second-hand nature and a form of nature that would not exist without regular sheep grazing.
