The hill castle, situated on a wedge-shaped hill, dominates the city. It consists of an oval core castle with an area of about 40 × 100 meters, which is surrounded by a ring wall. The round keep has a wall thickness of three meters and a diameter of eleven meters. Elaborate kennels with three semicircular flanking towers are grouped around the castle.

The old town is a historic cultural monument of high rank. Their rich inventory of half-timbered houses from five centuries, which are significant in terms of building history, is already recognized in the local statute of 1910. Today, the approximately 400 half-timbered houses in their entirety are listed. In 1978, Hornburg became the national winner in the "Urban Design and Monument Protection in Urban Development" competition. The old town served several times as a film set for cinema films.
