The Planena lock is a lock on the federal waterway Saale near Saale-km 70.38. Planena is today the southernmost district of the city of Halle (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt. The actual village of Planena is a small rural village in the southwest of the district.
The lock, built in 1820, is a simple chamber lock with vertical walls. The lock chamber and head of the lock consist of brick masonry with a sandstone cladding. The lock sole was laid out with sandstone blocks. Mortise gates, which are driven electromechanically, are used to close the chamber. The lock chamber is emptied and filled using short lateral circuits. The lock is approved for ships up to a length of about 47 meters, which corresponds to the unstrut dimension that is no longer common today. A bridge leads over the head of the lock.
