During the Second World War, a Sunderland flying boat was badly damaged after a dogfight against eight German aircraft over the Bay of Biscay. The crew returned 800 miles to the Cornish coast where the aircraft foundered at Praa Sands. The people of Praa Sands took the crew into their homes and provided medical assistance. On June 2, 2013, a memorial was opened on the green at Praa Sands.

Praa Sands. Long light golden sandy beach. Close to better known Penzance, Marazion and Lizard Point still worth a visit. Busy on sunny days in the summer.

Praa Sands is a one mile long beach with lovely white sand. There is a car park close by and apparently the shallows are quite suitable for paddling and swimming although further out the waves are more suited to those keen on surfing. As with many beaches in this area there is a dog ban during the summer months.
