According to legend, the church, dating from the late 10th century, goes back to a foundation of the Byzantine Empress Theophanu, the wife of Emperor Otto II. In 1215 the church was donated to the Teutonic Order by Emperor Friedrich II. Due to its original floor plan, the church has similarities to the church of St. Peter in Mistail in Graubünden and identifies it as a Carolingian hall church. The round apses of the early Romanesque predecessor building are still preserved today. In 1896 the church was renovated in a historicist style. In the years 1969 and 1982 another restoration took place. Source: Wikipedia
