In the late second and early third centuries AD, the area of today's Rheinbrohl was the site of a Roman fort. Here was the northern beginning of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes.Rheinbrohl itself was first mentioned on May 3, 877 in a letter from King Charles the Bald and at that time belonged to the Nivelles Abbey in the Duchy of Brabant. The bailiffs were the Counts of Sayn.
