The cathedral is located on the Ukimerioni hill above the Rioni river. During excavations on the occasion of the reconstruction in 2003, the remains of prehistoric buildings and the foundations of several slightly smaller previous buildings were found under the church. A basilica from the 6th century was probably destroyed by the Persians and was rebuilt in the 7th/8th. Century rebuilt larger.
The Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos was built at the beginning of the 11th century under the reign of King Bagrat III. (r. 978–1014) built. On the north wall there is an inscription that tells about the completion of the church in 1003. The church was vandalized and blown up by the Ottomans in 1692, causing the dome and ceilings to collapse.
The badly damaged church was not initially rebuilt. Restoration work began in 1952.

In 1994, the cathedral, together with the Gelati Monastery, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2001 the church was handed over to the Georgian Orthodox Apostles Church. Contrary to ICOMOS' recommendations, the church was reconstructed in its original form and completed in 2012. UNESCO then placed the cathedral on the list of World Heritage in Danger during the construction phase and removed it from the World Heritage Site in 2017, where only the Gelati Monastery remains.

Great view over Kutaisi, the redesign of the cathedral is debatable.
