Südheimer Platz originated with the Südheim housing estate (1901–1903) north of the Old Shooting Club (1895), both built by the Stuttgart architect Karl Hengerer. Since 1929, the Stuttgart funicular has connected Heslach with the Waldfriedhof cemetery, which is located higher up, from Südheimer Platz. The eastern edge development was built around 1928, including the now listed Bauhaus-style Ziegelklinge housing estate. Today, the Südheim housing estate, as well as the Old Shooting Club, are protected as a whole as a historic monument.

Südheimer Platz - between stone spheres

There was a similarly controversial discussion as in the case of Marienplatz in connection with the redesign of Südheimer Platz - too much concrete, too little green, so the allegations to the planners. However, anyone who can remember the former B14 bridge will hardly be able to deny that the entire area only deserved the name Platz after the extensive redesign!
