Hanekenfähr (older spellings also Hanneken- or Haneckenfähr) is an area on the Ems River between Lingen (Schepsdorf and Darme) and Emsbüren (Elbergen) in the Emsland district. The Ems weir in Hanekenfähr, also called "Waterfall"Until the 19th century, a ferry crossed the Ems at this point. The Ems and the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK) merge two kilometers earlier, behind the Gleesen Lock, thus forming the first common course of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the navigable Ems River up to the Ems weir in Hanekenfähr. Today, Hanekenfähr is important as a hub in the Ems waterway network and as a local recreation area. The Ems River forms the municipal border between Emsbüren and Lingen. An industrial area also lies adjacent, which reduces the quality of the local recreation area due to noise emissions.
