    By order of the government of the GDR in 1954 the construction of the "national memorial and memorial Buchenwald" began. Until 1958 a monumental national monument was erected on the south side of the Ettersberg. The design included three large mass graves. The didactic concept of the facility shows the visitor a way from death to life: coming from the crematorium through the camp, the path leads down to the tombs and then up to the bell tower as the symbol of freedom and light.
