This gulley is a tough little steep climb, but it is nice and interesting. You can avoid it by coming up or going down a little bit further south, closer to Twyn Mwyalchod. This is a fun route, but not if you have any form of dodgy knees. If you are going up, the access to it can also be a tad waterlogged in the winter. It is a rocky gulley, so you will need three points of contact at times.

Some of the comments here exaggerate a bit. The path is well maintained and has lots of steps. It is never actually difficult or too steep. You might need a bit endurance if you want to ascent on speed, but if you take it a bit more slowly it is quite relaxed. The easier path going towards Pen y Fan over the ridge is definitely worth the ascent as are the views.

Good scramble route, just to advice people we were using Trail magazine route 2018 and there is building work around the reservoir so it's hard to cross. We found a spot further up but it took us uphill into marshland to get back on track.
Once back on track we reached the scramble and it's a step scramble. Take it slow and there are spots where you can stop have a drink or snack break and good photo opportunities. My advice is take it slow up the scramble that leads up to Graig fan Ddu because a wrong move can be dangerous due to lose rocks and slates and it's a big drop, but plenty of good foot holds and hand supports on the sides further up.
Make sure you grab a rock as there are a pile of rocks at the top to show that people have conquered it.
Would recommend this route for anyone looking for more adventure leading up to Pen y Fan and surrounding peaks.
