Like the species-rich genus Pinus itself, pine forest occurs in a wide variety of forms worldwide. Three pine species occur naturally in Central Europe. The most common and widespread species is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). It is the most common pine species everywhere and the only naturally occurring pine species in the northern part. The black pine (Pinus nigra subsp. nigra), which is widespread in southern Europe and montane, is only rarely found in Austria. In Germany it was occasionally cultivated and has become wild, but does not form any natural forests. The multiform mountain pine (Pinus mugo) in its prostrate form (subsp. mugo) forms bushes in the mountains at the tree line, its upright growth forms (subsp. uncinata and rotundata) can occasionally appear as forests. The fourth species could be the stone pine or Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra), which forms forests at the alpine tree line. Because of their completely different ecology, they will not be discussed hereSource: Wikipedia

Much does not grow on the sand dunes, but what little is beautiful
