The first exhibition devoted to the early medieval history of Wolin was organized by German researchers in the 1930s. The exhibition was opened in one of the classrooms (a non-existent building of the secondary school located on today's Zamkowa Street), which at that time housed the workshop of the management of archaeological excavations, which began in 1934 and lasted until the eruption of the World War II lasted.

The first post-war exhibition opened in Wolin in 1952. It was located in the building of the Archaeological Workshop at 16 Zamkowa Street and was prepared by employees of the local institution. The exhibition presented the results of the latest archaeological research conducted after 1945. It was very popular and a commemorative book with entries from visitors to the exhibition such as Kazimierz Błahij, journalist, reporter, writer, author of The Last Mystery of the Sunken Gods has survived to this day.

The opening of the Regional Museum in Wolin took place on July 22, 1966. The exhibition covered the history of Wolin from the 9th to the 12th centuries. The scenario of the exhibition was developed by a team of researchers from the Archaeological Workshop of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wolin (currently the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences), i. H. Wladyslaw Filipowiak, Eugeniusz Cnotliwy and Jerzy Wojtasik. The exhibition was realized by the staff of the West Pomeranian Museum in Szczecin and the artists Teresa and Jan Zdarewicz. This exhibition aroused great interest - from July to December 1966 the museum was visited by about 4 thousand people.

The regional museum in Wolin opened in 1966. The mosaic map of the city on the top wall of the museum attracts attention.
