The Lengericher Canyon is the remains of an old quarry.
A lake has formed deep down which, depending on the sunlight, shines brightly turquoise. The area around the lake is now a nature reserve. So you are not allowed to go down and / or bathe. Three great viewpoints have been created for this purpose:
Two of them are located directly on the Hermannsweg, which runs along the plateau above the canyon. This plateau is extensively grazed with goats who come to the fence trustingly. The viewing platforms offer a great view of the canyon, but also - because it is located on the plateau and thus at the upper edge of the former quarry - a sensational view far into the Münsterland lowlands.

A worthwhile end to the hike. In the best weather, the small lake appears beautifully blue to turquoise. The main vantage point is small, so there are always some people there to get the best photo. The canyon can be reached on foot after 1 km from the parking lot at the small chapel.

The hiking trails around it are beautiful. At the weekend the area is hopelessly overcrowded. The canyon is a worthwhile destination for the "Instagram generation". For a selfie in front of the turquoise-blue water, you have to travel from Cologne and then of course you have to enter the prohibited zone in the nature reserve. This is not only stupid but also dangerous! Two weeks ago there was an accident in a similar area with a critically injured person!

The origin as a quarry is (unfortunately) clearly recognizable. But at least one of the nicer sights of mining in the region and nature is reclaiming the area bit by bit. The view from the vantage point is beautiful, but it doesn't make you forget how it could be here, if you hadn't first intervened heavily in nature.

From the marked point you have the best view of the canyon. The area directly on the water is closed to visitors for nature conservation reasons and is also dangerous. There have been accidents in the past, unfortunately with fatal results. Nevertheless, some of the "Instagram" generation don't care much about the ban.
