Vorden Castle was mentioned as early as the 12th century and was first sold in 1315, with Steven van Vorden passing the castle over to his uncle. The history of the castle begins with this family. The castle as it is today was mostly built in the 16th century.

Vorden Castle was already mentioned in the 12th century. You can visit the estate and that is quite special, because the castle is not a museum but a very charming and authentically furnished house!

Skating
So the castle probably dates from the 12th century, but was very different then than it is now. The square tower was at least part of the medieval structure, but the castle, as we see it today, was mostly built in the 16th century. This square shape was common at the time. Characteristic is a walled forecourt with a drawbridge. However, the castle lost its defensive function over the centuries and was converted into a country house in the 19th century. In 1873 the entrance was placed on the north wing, with a wooden bridge over the moat.
