Best Race Bike Rides to Glessener Höhe – Cols de Cologne
Tips
  • Don't trust anyone who claims that the Glessenerhöhe is just an overburden heap. fake news! The "Monte Glessano" is the place of pilgrimage for cyclists in the otherwise flat west of Cologne. At 205 meters high, it is not only the highest elevation in the Rhein-Erft district, its two-kilometer-long, even gradient is said to have served one or the other professional as preparation for the difficult mountain stages of the tour.

The only bend on the way up, where there is always a bit of gravel lurking for the pilgrims, can also be described as legendary.

  • The Glessener Höhe, a 205m high spoil dump from the surrounding opencast mines, is the highest point in the Rhein-Erft district.
While the plateau above is used more by gravelers and rabbits, the ascent is also very popular with racing cyclists.

  • A classic in the region. But has the disadvantage that it is a dead end for racing bikes. Everything is "shattered" above

  • A must if you want to gain altitude in the corner. Happy a few times in a row.

  • If the Allrather / Vollrather Höhe is the Galibier of the local turnip taiga, the Glessener Höhe is the Col du Lautaret ;-)

The paved route offers a good opportunity to collect a few meters in altitude and is an option for most cyclists, whether the moderate gradient.
Very popular segment with the local Strava community.

  • It wouldn't be a highlight in the Alps, but we don't have that many gradients here.
    So let's make it ourselves!
Even ascent with a single curve - always lurking gravel ...

  • Nice view, also the only "real" climb far and wide

  • The Glessenerhöhe is well known among cyclists. Good area for practicing climbs. Also very demanding for gravlers in some places.

  • Recommendation: Collect 3 x Mont Glessen for the elevation gain.

  • Ideal to make for a few meters of altitude Watch out for pedestrians on the descent, they come out of the green straight onto the train!

  • It's really funny, but then I'd rather use the slopes of the Villerücken to train.

  • Nice climb to collect altitude meters. With an altitude difference of 80m, training intervals can be scaled between 80m and 800m. Is also one of the few climbs that can be reached quickly in the west of Cologne.

  • This is the highest place in the Rhein-Erft district. Although you have to pedal a little high with the racing bike, the descent on the same route is awesome.
Be sure to include it in road bike tours from time to time.
