Good overview of the open pit.
The Großtagebau Garzweiler (later called Garzweiler I) was built in 1983 by the merger of the excavation fields Frimmersdorf-Süd and Frimmersdorf-West. Frimmersdorf-Süd was created around 1960 from the merger of the mines Neurath and Heck, whose mining history dates back to the 19th century.

The pit rim is easy to drive north. The view is huge (.. to throw up).
