Since 1803 Laufenburg has been divided into a German and Swiss part with the Rhine as the border river, because of Napoleon's 'Mediations Act', which abolished the canton of Fricktal. As early as 1856, the German part of the city got a rail connection with the station, the Swiss part of it only in 1892.

In 1914 the characteristic course of the Rhine with rapids at the height of the then still wooden bridge from 1810 ('Laufenbrücke') came to an abrupt end due to the construction of a hydroelectric power station a little further on. The new bridge from 1911 was radically renovated in 1982 and in the middle, right on the border, the statue of the Bohemian priest/martyr Johannes Nepomucenus (1350-1393) was replaced. In 2004 a new motorway bridge was built east of Laufenburg to relieve the historic old bridge in the center of the town.

On January 1, 2010, the then independent municipalities of Sulz (AG) was merged with Laufenburg.
