The Ria Formosa Natural Park covers over 170 km² of coastal wetlands in a system of barrier islands that communicates with the sea through six inlets, and is an important stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods. However, as the park was designated only in 1987, several coastal towns and important cities are located in or near the Ria Formosa such as Pedras d'El Rei, Tavira, Faro and Olhão.
