The first town hall building dates from the second half of the 14th century. In 1562, the town hall was converted into a half-timbered building with an open staircase. This was the seat of the council and court of the imperial city of Wimpfen, the upper court and, in 1539/40, the imperial chamber court.

In 1839, the building was demolished due to its dilapidation and the current classicist new building was built. Today, four coats of arms on the town hall facade commemorate different eras of the city's eventful history.

The town hall was built in 1831 in the classicist architectural style, when the city belonged to the Grand Duchy of Darmstadt-Hesse (see also the coat of arms on the facade).
The rulers of Hesse at the time had found salt deposits beneath the city and ensured an economic boom through the construction of a saltworks and salt trade. Added to this was the emerging tourism.
That's why Wimpfen became the spa town of Bad Wimpfen.
