    five button tower

The five-button tower is a defensive tower with a pentagonal floor plan, which turns away from the city like a prow. The name comes from the five button-like attachments mounted on each of the three bay-like turrets on the tower's roof and two on the tower's hipped roof. This distinguishes it from most other Gothic five-button towers, which usually have four turrets on the corners. The tower was built at the beginning of the 15th century, probably between 1423 and 1425, from hump ashlars. The half-gable is a half-timbered construction. In the 16th century the roof bays were added, which give the tower its characteristic appearance today. For many years, up until the 20th century, the tower served as a fire watchtower.[2] Until 2003, the tower was rented out privately and the tower keeper's apartment was inhabited.

There was always repair and renovation work on the tower. In 1930 the copper buttons were replaced after a lightning strike. The wooden paneling on the east side was replaced in 1933 and in the 1960s. The west side was renovated in 1958, and a transformer station was installed in the tower in 1959. In 1967 the tower received a new bell in its iron roof attachment with a weather vane after the old bell had to be given up in 1942. The submitted bell dates from 1531 and was cast by Leonhard Friedler in Esslingen am Neckar. It was 45 cm high and 52 cm in diameter and bore the inscription in German: 1531 leonhart fridler poured me zu eslingen got be praised. Next to it was: wergl + bert + gos + mirs + vi + imperial + steir + ufz + dezemb + Carolus/Rom.

A last extensive renovation of the tower was carried out in 2014/2013 for the State Garden Show Schwäbisch Gmünd 2014.[3]

The five button tower was built around 1420.

It is 27 meters high and is the only one of all towers to have a pentagonal floor plan.

The lower gate, about 50m in front of the main wall, was guarded by the five-button tower in front of the main wall. An underground passage connected the tower with the Lower Gate.
