Ilbenstadt Monastery – Niddatal 🚴♂️The former monastery complex is located in the municipality of Niddatal-Ilbenstadt. Construction of the church began in 1123. The monastery housed men and women, a so-called double monastery. Around 1138, construction began on Niederilbenstadt Monastery, about 500 meters further down the valley. It was occupied by the female branch around 1150. The (present) two-towered church was consecrated in 1158. The entire monastery complex was rebuilt between 1695 and 1715. The old parish church was demolished in 1819. Much of the monastery church's inventory was sold. The abbey church became the parish church of Ilbenstadt. From 1923 to 1937, Benedictines from Kornelimünster settled in the monastery building. It then served as a Reich Labor Service camp for girls. In 1963, a fire destroyed the old monastery, which was rebuilt in a modern form and run as a youth and educational center of the Diocese of Mainz 🚴♂️
