The tower of the - Tilsande Kirke - has been a listed building since 1903 and can even be visited - daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To do this, you first have to climb a very narrow spiral staircase. Once you have overcome this it is easier.

A wonderful relic from earlier days, it's very popular today and can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
The stairs are quite narrow, so watch out for oncoming traffic.

The St. Laurentii Church The silted up church

People have lived in Skagen since the 13th century. The oldest information about the St. Laurentii Church dates back to 1387. At that time the church was located between the hamlets of Vesterby, Højen and the Lunholm Manor. The church was dedicated to St. Laurentius.

In 1795 King Christian VII gave permission to shut down the church, which could no longer be protected from the drifting sand. The church tower dates from the 15th century but was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. After the church was demolished, the tower served as a navigation mark and was therefore whitewashed in 1816. The last burial in the churchyard took place in 1810.

Very nicely situated in the dunes. In June there is always a big event with a stage etc.

From the parking lot the walk takes about 10 minutes and then you can already see the church tower. It's worth taking a first photo from here. It's impressive just to see the church's steeple and imagine what was going on here in 1795. The Church of St. Lawrence was built towards the end of the 13th century. In 1770 shifting dunes reached the church. After a sandstorm in 1775, attempts were made to keep the church entrance free for 20 long years. But unfortunately the church had to be abandoned in 1795. In 1805 the silted nave was demolished. The church tower, which was formerly made of red bricks, was painted white and used as a navigation mark. The tower has been a listed building since 1903 and can be visited.

The Sand-Encrusted Church serves as a further reminder of the devastation caused by the sand drift, especially since the church tower now stands completely alone in the dunes. The church's actual name is St. Lawrence's Church and served as Skagen's parish church from the late 14th century until 1795. As it gradually became unreasonable for faithful churchgoers to dig their way to the church during services, the fight against the sand drift began, until the church was closed down by order of the Danish King Christian VII. The nave was demolished, and today all that remains is the church tower protruding from the sand.

1 Sand-covered church: A church was built here at the end of the 14th century. But the problems with the drifting sand around the church were so great that churchgoers had to shovel their way clear in places. Eventually the sand got the upper hand. The tower has been preserved to this day and can be visited.

Here too, the sand is the culprit and the sand-covered church is the victim. Take a look at the area around the church on a short or longer hike, or even by bike.
There is an official car park with a playground and a kiosk.

This staircase to climb the church tower is definitely a highlight. Very narrow. A rope is attached for support. Above the spiral staircase it becomes more spacious.

In the middle of the dunes west of the beautiful town of Skagen is the tower of the old parish church of Vendsyssel from the Middle Ages.

The community fought against the sand for many years - but in the end the fight against the sand was given up.

A beautiful walking path leads to the church tower, which is set deep in the sand and can be climbed as an observation tower. Below, there's a vaulted dome, with massive beams supporting the roof, where swallows nest. And the St. Lawrence Church is always worth a visit for Wuppertal residents, who have the St. Lawrence's emblem on their city coat of arms.
