Embark on a challenging hike along the historic WWI military road to Bocchetta dei Tre Signori. This difficult route takes you through high alpine terrain, where you'll follow red and white markers along a path carved by soldiers. You'll pass the serene Laghi di Ercavallo, with their clear waters reflecting the surrounding peaks, before reaching Bocchetta dei Tre Signori. The entire hike covers 9.6 miles (15.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2484 feet (757 metres), typically taking around 5 hours and 44 minutes to complete.

To begin your journey, head to Passo di Gavia, which serves as the starting point for this demanding trail. The route concludes at Rifugio Angelino Bozzi al Montozzo, offering a welcome stop after your efforts. At the refuge, you can find comfortable rooms and enjoy hearty mountain meals, making it a convenient place to rest or refuel. Consider the duration and difficulty when planning your start time, especially if you intend to stay at the refuge.

This trail follows a strategic wartime passage, originally carved by alpine soldiers during World War I without modern machinery. As you hike, you will walk through a historically rich corner of the Alps, culminating at Bocchetta dei Tre Signori, which marks the highest elevation of the official Sentiero Italia. At Rifugio Angelino Bozzi al Montozzo, you can explore interesting remnants of the Great War, including trenches and military structures from both Austrian and Italian forces, and visit a small war museum.
