The construction of the 158 meter high tower was begun on 29 June 1976 and was completed in 1977. It is located in the district of Widukindland on the northeastern outskirts of Belm and is therefore called by the operator Deutsche Funkturm (DFMG) Telmeters Belm or Belmer tower.

A special feature is the red plant glass made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) and steel.
