Kinzigtor Tower, Gengenbach

Today's main access gate to the historic old town - during the summer months, the tower can be visited on Saturdays and Sundays.

The 24-meter-high Kinzig Gate was built in the 13th/14th century and has been rebuilt and renovated several times over the years. It is the city gate to the south.

If you follow the course of the city wall from the Kinzig side, you can see that it led directly to the Kinzigtor tower. It is the largest and strongest of all towers and had the most important role in city defense.

The battlements led to this tower from both sides. The city was guarded day and night from the tower dwelling. The watchman's task was to levy a municipal toll on the approaching rafts on the Kinzig and on the merchants arriving across the bridge, because Gengenbach, as a free imperial city, had trading sovereignty. Another important task was the fire watch and calling out the hour. All occurrences were reported with a brass horn, which the city still owns. The Kinzigtor tower was the main entrance to the city. During the renovation that began in 1991, the portcullis was reinstalled and the tower turned into a museum. Here you can learn a lot about the history and function of the Kinzigtor Tower. The past of the Gengenbach militia is also documented. In addition, various props such as rifles, bandoliers and swords are on display, and on the top floor you can visit a tower watchman's apartment that has been faithfully reproduced.
