The idyllic Friedrichshöhe lies on 800m NN directly at the Rennsteig and at the end of a branch road. Surrounded by forests, it offers long-distance views, meadows, raised bog, quaint gastronomy and not least the information center of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The village was founded in 1725 by glassmakers and got its name from the sovereign of the Duchy of Saxe- Hildburghausen, Ernst-Friedrich I. Until 1989 was Friedrichshöhe with 32 inhabitants the smallest municipality of the GDR. The recognizable building on its clock tower in the center, housed until 1961, one of the last Einklassenschulen in the GDR.
