    The Karlstor (1788) - Neckargemünd 🚴‍♂️

The Karlstor in Neckargemünd (Baden-Württemberg) was built in 1788. The gate at the end of the old town is a protected architectural monument. In 1771, the Obertor (Upper Gate) that stood on the same site was demolished along with the other city gates. The Karlstor in Neckargemünd, like the Karlstor in Heidelberg, was built in honor of Elector Karl Theodor. The Karlstor, made of red sandstone and shaped like a triumphal arch, bears the Latin inscription on its exterior: "non urbis securitati ast Caroli Theodori electoris palatini gloriae aedificata porta palationo aque et extero sancta perenabit MDCCLXXXI" (Built not for the security of the city, but for the glory of Elector Karl Theodor, the gate will nevertheless endure through the ages as sacred to the Palatinate as to foreigners (1781). On the city side of the gate, the inscription reads in German: "In honor of the father of the fatherland, to the adornment of the city, holy to the people." The Karlstor is crowned by a heraldic cartouche with a crown and a lion, with sandstone vases to the right and left of it. 🚴‍♂️
