The church of Prästö dates from the early Middle Ages and is the oldest building in the city.

Nestled between forests and the Præstø fjord, the provincial town of 3000 inhabitants has a special charm off the main road (E4). The center of the city is dominated by old streets with half-timbered houses, merchant farms and large packing houses. Strikingly many vine plants adorn the old town houses. Many of the buildings date back to the 19th century. The only surviving medieval building is the church, although Præstø was mentioned in documents in 1321. All other houses burned down. After that (around 1750) it was decided that in Præstø no house could be built with a thatched roof.

The town of Præstø is first mentioned around 1300, and there was probably also a church in the town at that time. In the first half of the 15th century the construction of a tower for the church began. However, the other part of the old church was in very poor condition, and around the middle of the 15th century construction began on a completely new building – today's northern part of Præstø Church.
