    Hiking

Built at the end of the 14th century on the banks of the Rhine with a strong hexagonal keep, Martinsburg was a customs castle. The picturesque building was erected together with the city fortification. The Spitzbogentor in the east wall still shows a dainty Wehrerker with coat of arms. The other tower and building parts were built in the 14th and 18th centuries.

Today the castle is privately owned.

Martinsburg Castle, or Martinsburg for short, is a castle complex in Lahnstein. It was built in 1298 as a customs castle for the Archbishops of Mainz and was originally called Burg Lahnstein. In addition to the city wall in Lahnstein, the Archbishop of Mainz also built this complex, which is one of the few undestroyed castles on the Middle Rhine. Today it is privately owned and houses apartments and offices as well as a carnival museum and a mint.
