When you think of the iconic features of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the first things that comes to mind. This impressive suspension bridge links the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County, with fantastic views of the city, marina and Crissy Field. It’ is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States, putting it at the top of many cyclist's bucket lists.

While crossing, you can gaze up at the towering beams above or look down into the deep waters of the San Francisco Strait below you as sailboats drift by in the mouth of the Bay. Traveling along the Bridge can be cold, windy, and foggy, even in the summer, so dress appropriately.

At the south end, you can purchase a souvenir at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion and visit the café next to the visitor center. Restrooms are at both the north and south ends, and cyclists have toll-free access to the Bridge's sidewalks 24 hours a day. A bike ride across this extraordinary Bridge is an adventure you don't want to miss!

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km), three-mile-long (4.8 km) channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the city of San Francisco – the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula – to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 on six lanes with a movable median across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It opened in 1937 and was, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m).

You may walk or bike for free the entire length of the 1.2 mile-long bridge, but dress warmly! At the south end, gifts can be purchased at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion and a café next to the restrooms and visitor center provides food. There are also restrooms at the North end vista point. During the part of the year with daylight savings time, the bridge walk on the eastern (bay) side is open to pedestrians between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. The remainder of the year the bridge walk is open from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. But you can ring a bell and look into the camera to be buzzed through by bridge security staff after dark. The western sidewalk is closed to pedestrians and reserved to bicycles.

We drove over by bicycle. Brilliant - continue to Sausalito or Tiburon and then back on the ferry.
