Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is 2.7km long, 27.5m wide and has six lanes. It floats about 70m (depending on the water level) above the water. The height of the pillars is 227m. The steel hanging ropes have a diameter of almost one meter and a total length of 2.3 km. If the individual steel wires were tied together, they would have a total length of 129,000 km. The bridge weighs a total of 887,000t.
Until 1964 it was allowed to adorn itself with the title "Longest suspension bridge in the world". Then it was superseded by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York. Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is still in the top ten in the world for its span. Depending on the volume of traffic, a decision is made as to how many lanes are available for cars going in or out of town. For this purpose, bright yellow pylons, which are very often driven around, are set up as median markings. More than 150,000 vehicles pass through this bottleneck every day. Due to this high volume of traffic, the construction costs of $37 million by 1971 were recouped by user fees.
