During the Edo period Kurashiki was a central hub for rice. Large quantities of rice from the area were brought to Kurashiki and stored there before being shipped to Osaka and Edo. "Kurashiki" can be roughly translated as "city of warehouses".

The canals were built to allow boats and barges to pass between the warehouses and the nearby port. A central part of the city's former canal system has been preserved in the historic district of Bikan.
