The memorial, popularly called the "bell tower", is a bit further away from the Buchenwald memorial. In addition to the monumental architecture of the memorial, it is above all the wide view that gives an idea of why the Ettersberg was a popular destination before the horror of National Socialism.

The Buchenwald Memorial, which can be seen from afar, is the burial place of thousands of concentration camp prisoners and is now the largest monument in memory of a National Socialist concentration camp in Europe. The monumental complex was built in 1958 on the south side of the Ettersberg as a national monument of the GDR.
