From 1919 to 1952 Waldemar Bonsels lived and worked in Ambach on the quiet eastern shore of Lake Starnberg, where he also wanted to be buried. The villa, built in 1885/86 with its gate that can be seen from afar, is now a listed building.
The colorful, folkloric gate at the driveway still reminds of Bonsel's cosmopolitanism and wanderlust, although it was not built especially for him. The Hungarian director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Julius v. Benczur, the previous owner of the property, set a striking symbol in the landscape with the “Székler Gate”.
