"The Bolmke represents the last remnant of the formerly extensive Emscher floodplain between Hörde and Barop. Here the Emscher meandered in a wide valley. It is a wetland zone that is still close to nature in many parts, but has been greatly changed by massive human intervention. After the First World War, coal was briefly mined in the Bolmke in illegal open-cast mining.

After the Second World War, the Emscher floodplain was reforested with poplar hybrids. Nevertheless, the floodplain forest consists of black alder, ash, willows, oak and hornbeam, maple and red oak. A wet fallow area and a side valley in the west are also covered with reeds and tall perennials such as marsh helleborine and sedge. Himalayan balsam has also spread on the south bank of the Emscher.

The Bolmke is very popular as a local recreation area in the densely populated area and is intensively cultivated used. Problems for the nature reserve arise from visitors' waste and from dogs that sometimes run around freely."
