The park is rectangular and surrounded on all sides by major thoroughfares. During the summer months there are regular free concerts and theater performances on weekends. Changes in traffic routing in 2004 led to a drastic reduction in road traffic. In medieval times, St. Stephen's Green was a slightly marshy area on the outskirts of Dublin, part of which was used for grazing. In 1663 the Dublin Corporation decided to develop the area and sold the land on the outskirts of the complex for building. The wall around the park was built a year later (1664).
