The Mengede/Castrop-Rauxel flood retention basin will be another major construction site to connect the basins - but it already looks more like a nature reserve than an actual technical facility. The pools fit nicely into the landscape, the greenery now offers a wonderful view and the facility now also attracts birdwatchers for extensive observation expeditions. Although the observation tower is apparently always closed, it offers a pleasant place to rest at its foot with a few benches and a view over the pools, which is now popular with walkers and cyclists.

The flood protection system has developed into a breeding ground for numerous animal and especially bird species and is located in the LSG Brueninghausen / LSG Emscherniederung landscape protection areas between the NSG Beerenbruch / NSG Mengeder Heide nature reserves. The Mengede district is already one of the most valuable areas in Dortmund from the perspective of landscape and nature conservation.
