Almost surprisingly, this sandstone giant stands out on a small mountain saddle between the firs of the Black Forest. To commemorate the "high presence" of the Grand Duke Friedrich and the Grand Duchess Luise in September 1858, an inscription is carved into the rock. Two benches nearby offer views and tranquility, deep in the forest.

The Kastelstein 825 meters above sea level is a rock formation made of red sandstone that has been declared a natural monument and that we owe to the last ice age. The rock formation has an elongated shape and consists of several horizontal layers of rock of different hardness. The softer, more easily eroded layers have been broken up and eroded by the influence of wind, water, ice, heat, resulting in the unusual shape of the rock formation. The rock has been artificially restored in parts.
