The Bommelse Bridge was the old half-timbered bridge over the Waal between Zaltbommel and Waardenburg on the A2 located at Rkm 933.55. The name Bommelse Brug was common, but the bridge was never officially named. The bridge was opened in 1933 and served until it was replaced by the new Waal Bridge, the Martinus Nijhoff Bridge, in early 1996, after which it was finally demolished in 2007.

    Fragment poem Martinus Nijhoff, 1934

I went to Bommel to see the bridge.

I saw the new bridge. Two opposite sides

who previously seemed to avoid each other,

become neighbors again. About ten minutes.

What once started as a ferry grew into a major river crossing, survived storms and war, and ended up as a small silent monument. The old Waal bridge in Zaltbommel. With its enchanting view of the Waal and the characteristic tower of Zaltbommel.

The robust steel construction from 1933, praised and hated over the years, was finally destroyed by the silent demolition hands in 2007. What we are left with are some steel remains. Rest in peace now, as a small monument.

From the Zaltbommelse bridge (Martinus Nijhoff bridge) you have a beautiful view of Zaltbommel and the floodplains.
