With completely inadequate supplies and accommodation, the Schwesingen prisoners had to carry out the hardest work in the cold and wet. The subcamp was led by Hans Hermann Griem, an SS lieutenant known for his cruelty, who also commanded the camp in Ladelund. The SS dissolved the camp in Schwesing in December 1944.

Due to the inhumane conditions and as a result of mistreatment, more than 300 concentration camp prisoners died here. These dead were buried in mass graves in the Husum Ostfriedhof. For decades, the grave complex inaugurated there in 1957 was the only memorial commemorating the victims of the concentration camp subcamp.

      Husum-Schwesing Concentration Camp Memorial

From September to December 1944, a subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp was located in Schwesing near Husum. The SS deported around 2,600 men from numerous European countries to this camp. They had to do forced labor on the construction sites of the so-called Friesenwall, a defense system that, from today's perspective, is pointless. The SS transferred some of the prisoners to Ladelund on the Danish border at the beginning of November 1944. Another subcamp of the concentration camp was built there to build anti-tank ditches.

Very well maintained facility, also accessible by car. Parking on site.
