The nature reserve 't Hemrik is despite its small size (only 8 ha) one of the most valuable goods of the Groningen landscape. It is a mini-open-air museum that shows the landscape of the past. In this small area lie the remnants of a swamp forest with trees that are crooked in the damp soil. Swamp plants such as blue reed, star, wire and swamp cartel also grow in a small meadow.

In 't Hemrik there is the remains of a swamp forest, with trees growing haphazardly from the wet ground. Around 1900, dikes were constructed along the Drentse Aa and this nature reserve changed from a pond to a swamp. Wood was cut down in the swamp forest in the past and the tree stumps that remained created microenvironments for fungi, mosses and amphibians.
