When it was constructed (1822-1826), the canal was still called Willemsvaart. When a Drentse Willemsvaart was added a few years later, ‘Zuid-‘ was added.
The canal owes its name to King Willem I, who decided to dig a connecting canal between Maastricht and 's-Hertogenbosch in 1822.

The Zuid-Willemsvaart serves as a lateral canal of the Maas. Several other important waterways connect to it, including the other Kempische canals and the Wilhelminakanaal. On its almost 122 km long route, the Zuid-Willemsvaart passes through cities such as Maastricht, Maasmechelen, Bree, Weert, Helmond and 's-Hertogenbosch.
